When I arrived to the picnic area next to a Target in the southwestern part of Arizona, I was afraid I was going to be late to the photo shoot. But as I stepped out into the chilly air while the sun was making its way to set, a couple crossing Target's parking lot caught my attention. (Side note: Once I met with Alejandra and Nick inside Target, where I awkwardly decided it was appropriate to use the restroom because that's what people do in Target, I came out to meet Gabee, and she looked so beautiful! She was wearing a plain, elastic dress, tights, black shoes and a denim jacket complemented nicely by her fair skin and vibrant hair. This is me attempting to encourage Gabee to post something about that outfit.)
Even from afar, they're mesh of a variety of eras draws any bystander, transporting them into a new age -- a simpler age.
"Simply, Alejandra and Nick," the phrase they both agreed suited their style, cultivate a mixture of Alexa Chung's "minimalistic" (on Alejandra's side) and a casual, serious-but-not-too-serious look (on Nick's side) and together make something along the lines of elegance and beauty.
Now, here's a Q&A with Nick Alejandra where they can tell you in their own words, where they complete each other's thoughts (I'm a big cheese ball.) and all that other loveliness.
Pre-P.s. (If that even exists) Gabee and I ran into Stephanie Espinoza at the Starbucks where we conducted the interview. You may have remember her from a previous post. She's such a doll.
How did you two meet?
Nick: Well, she asked me to perform at our school's Poetry Night. So she asked me.
Alejandra: Before that, we used to talk a little bit on Facebook and Tumblr, but it wasn't until last April that --
Nick: --that we would talk in person.
Who asked who out?
Alejandra: I think it was both of us.
Nick: Yeah.
Alejandra: Because we were on the phone and I kind of had the feeling that he had a crush on me, and I had a crush on him, and so, I was just like, "Nick, tell me a secret." I asked him that before, and he said he didn't have secrets. And this time he was like, "Maybe I'll tell you after Poetry Night." And I was just like no. And so he told me.
Do you think your guys' style is dependent on each other?
Nick: Well, kind of yeah, because we're always asking each other what we're going to wear tomorrow.
Alejandra: I always say "nothing."
Do either of you feel the need to dress really nice when you just want to dress down because you're afraid the other might look nicer? Do you guys ever feel that individually you have to keep up this idea of a really well-dressed couple?
Alejandra: I kind of feel like that sometimes because, even though he thinks I'm being sarcastic, I really do think he looks nice all the time, even the days that he's like, "I look like poop." Like, no, you don't.
Nick: [Laughs]
Alejandra: I want to look like nice as well. Even though I don't value other people's opinions, I don't want people to be like, "Oh, there goes trendy Nick with his like, fugly girlfriend."
Nick: I honestly don't think I dress really nice at all. I like to look somewhat, I guess, okay, but I assume she dresses better than me. I just try to look like somewhat okay.
I know for you Nick, there were two people that said we should feature you. How do you feel knowing that your peers value that about you?
Nick: It's weird because I don't try to look nice.I just wear what I like. I'm happy.
What do you think strangers think when they see you two together?
Nick: I ususally think, "Oh, wow, how is this kid with her?" You know that what I think.
Noemi & Gabee: Awwwww...
Alejandra: I don't know. I've never really thought about that. I don't know.
It's a Saturday night. You two are going to a coffee shop. How do you dress up?
Alejandra: I don't know. It depends on the weather. I like to wear dresses and skirts a lot. I'm not a big fan of pants. I'll wear them if it's cold. But it's cold right now and I'm wearing a skirt. Most likely a skirt and some tights or something.
Nick: I usually always wear black pants. I love black pants. I would probably just wear a buttoned down shirt.
Alejandra: A blue one...
Nick: Probably a blue one. I have like ten of them.
Alejandra: You wear the cardigan I gave you a lot.
Nick: Oh, yeah, she gave me a cardigan, and I love it!
Where do you guys get inspiration for your style -- individually?
Alejandra: Well, I really love Alexa Chung. I love her. I try to emulate styles from her. Also, Florence Welch, Michelle Williams. It's like color-scheme-wise is very minimalistic and it's not boring but it's what makes it more timeless, and elegant. they have these little perks to them, whether it be their hair or nails. A little classy with a twist.
Nick: I don't know. I just wear what I like. If I don't know what to wear, I just go on Lookbook and see if something catches my eyes. I try to dress pretty casual. Serious, but not too serious.
If your guys' outfit could sing, which songs would they sing?
Alejandra: What?
Nick: [Laughs]
Nick: [Laughs] No!
Alejandra: No, I'm just kidding. Interesting.
Nick: I've never had a question like this.
Alejandra: I know. Wow.
Noemi: This is our million dollar question.
Gabee: This is what we're made of.
everyone laughs for a moment...and then life goes on.
Alejandra: I don't know, probably something by The Smiths because I love The Smiths. When I think of The Smiths and just Morrissey's music, like lyrically, they can sound kind of depressing, but at the same time they also have an upbeat sound to them. I'm not saying I'm depressed. But usually, I wear a lot of black and I think black can be a very happy color.
Nick: That's a tough one. Well... Well, I want to say Brand New, but no. I want to say something like the band Silversun Pickup because they're very upbeat and pretty chill and I hope I'm portrayed like that.
What about as a couple? When Morrissey and Silversun Pickup come together:
Nick: Silversun Pickup.
Alejandra: [Laughs] I remember early on in the relationship he posted this song on my Facebook page by Seawolf, The Rose Captain.
Nick: Oh.
Alejandra: Every time I hear, I just think of him. Either that or We Found Love in a Hopeless Place by Rihanna. Just kidding.
Nick: Or maybe something by Bloc Party.Like Modern Love.
Alejandra: Yeah...I feel like he's kind of singing to her or him, I don't know, and lyrically he's like Come On. Not in that way! But sometimes like, come on, Nick, show me something. Not sexually, just show me some love.
